Lorien's leading banking client is looking for a strong Principal Engineer to join a high-profile transformation programme delivering a next-generation cloud-native customer onboarding platform.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role, combining architecture, engineering excellence, and team mentorship to help deliver a business-critical platform.

While experience within Banking or Financial Services is preferred, we are also keen to speak with candidates from technology-driven organisations, start-ups, scale-ups, or other complex engineering environments with experience building modern cloud-native platforms

The ideal candidate for this position has strong expertise in Cloud-Native Microservice Development (Python/Java), Containerisation (Docker/ECS/EKS), and GitLab, CI/CD, Terraform.

This role is based in London.

This role will be Via Umbrella.

Working in a Hybrid Model of 2 days a week on site.

Key Experience

Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering squads, driving engineering standards and best practices.

Design and develop cloud-native microservices using Python and/or Java.

Lead architecture and design for distributed, event-driven systems.

Champion modern DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and cloud engineering practices.

Mentor and coach a team of approximately 10 junior engineers, conducting code reviews and supporting technical development.

Collaborate with architects, product owners, and senior stakeholders to ensure successful programme delivery.

Drive production readiness through observability, resilience, automated testing, and secure engineering practices.

Key Skills

Experience operating as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, or equivalent senior technical leader.

Strong hands-on development experience with Python and/or Java.

Expertise in AWS, Docker, ECS/EKS (Kubernetes), and cloud-native microservices.

Experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures.

Strong knowledge of GitLab CI/CD, Terraform, Infrastructure as Code, and Continuous Delivery.

Proven ability to establish engineering standards, improve code quality, and influence technical direction.

Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing engineering teams.
