Payroll Partner (Fixed Term - 1 year) | People Team

Milano

Team description

SumUp's People Operations team keeps our people experience running smoothly across Europe — and payroll sits right at the heart of that. As we grow rapidly across Southern Europe, we're looking for a Payroll Partner to join us on a one-year fixed-term contract, taking full ownership of the payroll cycle for Spain and Italy. This is a solid next step for someone with a few years of payroll experience who's ready to go beyond the basics — driving real process improvements, working across two markets, and contributing to a People team that's building smarter, more efficient ways of working.

What you'll do

Own the end-to-end payroll cycle for Spain and Italy, ensuring accuracy and compliance with local laws and regulations

Spot and implement opportunities for automation and process improvement, using tools like Workday and Payslip to reduce manual effort and sharpen payroll quality

Handle employee payroll queries through our ticketing system, resolving issues with care and efficiency

Collaborate with People Operations, Compensation and Benefits, and Accounting to keep payroll data accurate and up to date

Support the regional payroll lead in managing relationships with external providers, including health insurers and pension providers

Review and update country-level payroll policies and procedures as the business evolves

What we’re looking for

Hands-on payroll experience covering the full cycle, with familiarity processing payroll in Spain or Italy.

Solid understanding of Spanish and/or Italian labour and tax law, with the confidence to apply it independently.

Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables and VLOOKUPs, and a natural comfort with data accuracy and attention to detail.

Experience working cross-functionally and communicating clearly with different teams and stakeholders.

A proactive approach to process improvement, with an interest in automation tools and finding smar
