Interim HR and Payroll Operations Officer | Education | TamworthLocation: Tamworth, Staffordshire (hybrid, typically two days a week on site) Contract: Interim, immediate start, initially until December 2026 with scope to extend Day Rate: Day rate negotiable, dependent on experience Sector: Education (Multi Academy Trust)
An immediate start opportunity for an Interim HR and Payroll Operations Officer to join a well established multi academy trust based in Tamworth that is currently managing a significant schools transfer programme. If you have strong payroll processing experience in schools and enjoy improving systems and processes, this role offers real scope to make a difference. About the role The role sits between the HR Operations Manager and the HR and payroll administration team, providing continuity and leadership through a period of change. You will own the payroll processing and checking stage for around 1,300 staff paid monthly, before the payroll is passed to an outsourced provider to run. Alongside this you will support HR operations and the due diligence work needed as schools transfer to new trusts, with a clear focus on tightening up systems and processes. Key responsibilities
Process monthly payroll inputs for approximately 1,300 teaching and support staff ahead of submission to the outsourced payroll provider
Check and reconcile timesheets, contracts, starters, leavers and changes
Ensure pay awards are applied correctly for teaching and support staff
Identify and resolve anomalies before payroll is submitted
Support the administration team day to day, providing guidance and continuity
Support due diligence for transferring schools, including single central record accuracy and data readiness for new trusts
Review existing processes and drive efficiencies, including moving away from paper based records
What we are looking for
Payroll processing and checking experience within the education sector (essential)
Understanding of teaching and support staff pay structures and pay awards
Strong eye for detail and confident reconciling data
A systems and process improvement mindset
Adaptable and comfortable working outside a narrow job description
Quick to pick up new HR and payroll systems; experience of SAM People, SIMS or similar is a bonus
Enhanced DBS, ideally on the update service (we can support with this if needed)
Why apply
Immediate start with a competitive, negotiable day rate
Hybrid working with flexible hours
Join a supportive central team at an important time for the trust
Broad experience across a large, multi school organisation
Option to be paid on a day rate or a fixed term contract
