GVP, Public Sector
Skills & Technologies
Job Description
Our mission is to automate coding. The first step in our journey is to build the best tool for professional programmers, using a combination of inventive research, design, and engineering. Our organization is very flat, and our team is small and talent dense. We particularly like people who are truth-seeking, passionate, and creative. We enjoy spirited debate, crazy ideas, and shipping code.
About the role
We’re looking for a Group Vice President (GVP) of Public Sector to build and lead Cursor’s public sector business from the ground up. This leader will define our go-to-market strategy across federal, state, and local government, and own the end-to-end motion—from early lighthouse deals to scaling a high-performing team. You’ll work closely with product, engineering, and leadership to ensure Cursor meets the unique needs of public sector customers, while navigating procurement, compliance, and security requirements.
This is a highly strategic and hands-on role for someone who thrives in zero-to-one environments and knows how to turn early traction into a durable, scaled business. You’ll be a key part of Cursor’s go-to-market leadership team and help shape how AI-powered developer tools are adopted across government.
We’re an in-person company with offices in San Francisco and New York, and we value tight collaboration across teams.
What you’ll do
- Own and drive Cursor’s public sector go-to-market strategy across federal, state, and local agencies
- Build, hire, and lead a high-performing public sector sales organization from the ground up
- Develop and close strategic, high-value deals while establishing repeatable sales motions
- Navigate complex government procurement processes, including RFPs, contracts, and compliance requirements
- Partner with product and engineering to align roadmap priorities with public sector needs (e.g., security, compliance, deployment models)
- Establish key partnerships with system integrators, resellers, and ecosystem players
- Represent Cursor externally with senior government stakeholders and at industry events
- Build internal processes, forecasting, and pipeline rigor to support rapid scaling
You may be a fit if
- You’ve built and scaled public sector sales teams at a high-growth technology company
- Deep experience selling into federal, state, and/or local government, with strong network and relationships
- Proven track record of closing large, complex deals and navigating long sales cycles
- Strong understanding of public sector procurement, compliance frameworks (e.g., FedRAMP), and security requirements
- Comfortable operating in early-stage environments with ambiguity and ownership
- Excellent leadership and hiring instincts, with a track record of building strong teams
- Ability to work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and leadership
- Passion for developer tools, AI, or technical products is a strong plus
If you want, I can tighten the tone (more aggressive / more startup-y) or tailor it specifically for federal-only vs broader public sector.
