Engineering Manager / Lead Developer (Hands-On) Java | JavaScript | Technical Leadership

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager / Lead Developer (Hands-On) to lead a talented software engineering team while remaining actively involved in technical design and software delivery.

This is a player-coach role suited to an experienced Lead Developer, Technical Lead or Engineering Manager who enjoys developing people, solving complex technical problems and contributing directly to the development of modern software products.

You will lead a team of Software Engineers, provide technical direction and work closely with Product, Architecture and other stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable and high-quality solutions. What you'll be doing

Lead, coach and support a team of Software Engineers through regular one-to-ones, feedback and development planning.

Remain hands-on, contributing to software design, coding, testing and technical problem-solving.

Provide technical leadership across applications built using Java and modern JavaScript technologies.

Lead code reviews, solution design sessions and architectural discussions.

Work closely with Product Managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.

Support the delivery of new features, system improvements and platform enhancements.

Promote engineering best practices, including clean code, automated testing, CI/CD and secure development.

Identify technical risks, remove delivery blockers and improve engineering processes.

Balance short-term delivery requirements with longer-term technical quality and platform scalability.

Help build a collaborative, accountable and high-performing engineering culture.

What we're looking for

Strong commercial software development experience using Java.

Experience with modern JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.

Previous experience as an Engineering Manager, Lead Developer, Technical Lead or Senior Software Engineer with leadership responsibilities.

The ability and willingness to remain technically hands-on.

Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns and engineering principles.

Experience leading code reviews and providing technical guidance to other developers.

Knowledge of automated testing, APIs, cloud platforms and CI/CD practices.

Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.

Experience coaching, mentoring and developing Software Engineers.

A pragmatic approach to balancing technical quality, delivery timescales and business priorities.

Desirable experience

Spring Boot or a similar Java framework.

React, Angular, Vue or Node.js.

Microservices and RESTful API development.

AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform.

Docker, Kubernetes or containerised environments.

Experience working within SaaS, enterprise software or high-availability platforms.
