Database / Data Engineer
£50,000 - £55,000 | Fully Remote, UK | Permanent
Are you a Database or Data Engineer who enjoys finding performance problems and designing better solutions, rather than simply maintaining databases?
We’re working with a growing technology company operating a high-volume, real-time data platform. They are creating a brand-new Database / Data Engineer position to take greater ownership of how data is structured, retrieved, cached and optimised across their systems.
The company handles fast-moving data where speed, reliability and low latency are critical. With significant growth planned over the next few years, they need an engineer who can help ensure the platform scales effectively as data volumes increase.
The Role
You’ll become the dedicated database/data specialist within an established development team, working across an environment that includes PostgreSQL, Redis, DynamoDB and AWS.
This isn't a traditional DBA position.
You'll work closely with developers and DevOps to understand existing data flows, identify performance issues and improve how applications access and retrieve data.
Optimising PostgreSQL queries, indexes and database structures
Investigating slow queries and performance bottlenecks
Designing efficient data retrieval and access patterns
Creating and maintaining views and materialised views
Reviewing how Redis is used for caching and real-time data
Helping determine when data should be cached, persisted or archived
Improving database performance across APIs and customer-facing services
Monitoring database health, performance and query load
Supporting database security, resilience, backups and recovery
Helping shape database standards and longer-term data architecture
What We're Looking For
Strong PostgreSQL and SQL experience
Good knowledge of database design and indexing
Strong query optimisation and performance-tuning skills
Experience analysing slow queries and query plans
Experience with Redis or similar caching/in-memory technologies
Experience working with high-volume, real-time or time-sensitive data
Experience working closely with software developers
A proactive approach to identifying and solving technical problems
Experience with AWS, RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, data pipelines or event-driven systems would be beneficial but isn't essential.
Experience in sports technology, betting, trading, IoT or another low-latency environment would also be useful, although we're open to candidates from any industry with the right technical background.
Why Apply?
This is a rare opportunity to step into a brand-new position with genuine ownership.
Become the dedicated database/data specialist
Solve genuine performance and scalability challenges
Work with real-time, low-latency data
Influence database architecture and engineering standards
Work with PostgreSQL, Redis, DynamoDB and AWS
Help prepare a growing platform for significant increases in data volume
Potentially help shape and grow the database/data function longer term
Work 100% remotely anywhere in the UK
This could be particularly well suited to a strong mid-level engineer ready to take their next step into a role with greater autonomy and ownership.
